WELCOME
The mission of the Social Roots Foundation is to champion social and economic justice while fostering education and enhancing access to mental health information and resources for underserved Indigenous and African American youth, young adults, and families.
Our Vision
Our vision is to empower BIPOC communities through the implementation of comprehensive service initiatives, mentorship programs, scholarships, and mental health career readiness, all crafted to nurture the potential of young adult women and foster individual and community well-being.
Our Purpose
At the Social Roots Foundation, we exist to be part of the solution for our youth—guiding them emotionally, physically, and spiritually toward healing and leadership. Through mentorship, education, and community, we help young people discover their power to transform their own lives and the lives of those around them.
Rooted in the spirit of Sankofa—“go back and get it”—we believe in walking forward while honoring where we come from. By looking back, we reclaim wisdom, strength, and purpose, empowering a new generation to lead with compassion, courage, and vision.
THE CHALLENGE
Indigenous and Black women face systemic barriers to mental health care due to historical and intergenerational mistrust of medical professionals, fewer culturally responsive providers, misdiagnosing, and under-treatment.
Suicide rates among Black females ages 15-24 rose from 1.9 per 100,000 in 1999 to 4.9 per 100,000 in 2020 — more than doubling. (Columbia University)
Among young adults aged 18-25: for Black young adults, ~4.9% had a serious mental illness in the past year (versus 7.9% for White young adults). (SAMHSA)
Young women of color are less likely to receive mental health treatment: fewer than 1 in 5 (18.4%) young women of color with symptoms of anxiety or depression received mental-health services (vs ~30.3% of young White women). (National Women's Law Center).

THE SOLUTION
Ms. Attitude is a monthly wellness and leadership program designed to empower young women ages 16–24 to grow with confidence, purpose, and community.
Each month, we meet online to explore a new topic—from financial literacy and emotional resilience to college preparedness and mentorship—all centered around holistic wellness and leadership development.
Every participant is paired with a Black woman mentor aligned with her career goals, meeting at least once a month for personal guidance and inspiration. Beyond virtual sessions, we also host in-person gatherings like our Bloom & Brunch and Wrapped in Leadership events, where sisterhood, self-discovery, and celebration come to life.
